Prerequisites

  • An active Ambient account with API access enabled

  • A ChatGPT Business or Enterprise account

  • Workspace Admin access (required to add the app)

  • Your Ambient MCP server URL (found in Ambient under Account Settings > Ambient API)

Don't see the API section in your account? Submit a request and we'll get you enabled.

Setup: Admin (one-time)

This part is done once by a Workspace Admin. After this, any team member can connect.

  1. Copy your MCP server URL from Ambient
Go to Account Settings > Ambient API and copy the MCP server URL.

  2. Navigate to Workspace Settings in ChatGPT
In ChatGPT, go to Workspace Settings > Apps and click Create.

  3. Enable Developer Mode

ChatGPT will prompt you to enable Developer Mode. You only need to do this once. Toggle it on to proceed.

  4. Create the app

Name the app Ambient, paste in the MCP server URL, and optionally add an icon (we can provide these). Accept the permissions and click Create.

  5. Enable the app for your workspace

Navigate to the Ambient app and enable it. This publishes it for all team members in your workspace.

  6. Exit Developer Mode

Once the app is created, you can toggle Developer Mode back off. Go to Apps > Advanced and toggle it off.

Setup: Team Members

Once the admin has published the app, any team member can connect in a few clicks.

  1. Navigate to your workspace apps

Go to Settings > Apps > Add More. You'll see Ambient listed as an internal app.

  2. Connect and authenticate

Click Connect. You'll be prompted to authenticate your Ambient account. Click Continue, then Approve.

Ambient is now connected and ready to use.

Verify it's working

Start a new chat. You should see a reference to the Ambient app. Try a prompt like:

  • "Tell me about all of my meetings with [person] from today"

  • "What are my action items from this morning's standup?"

  • "Pull all meetings with @companydomain.com"

You'll see ChatGPT run app requests and call the Ambient tools to find your meeting context.

Starter prompts to try

  • "What were my action items from [meeting name]?"

  • "Find all meetings with @companydomain.com"

  • "Summarize what was discussed with jane@company.com this month"

  • "Pull the transcript from my 1:1 with [person] on Tuesday"

  • "What's the latest on [project name]?"

  • "Help me draft a follow-up email based on my meeting with [person]"

Tips

  • Watch the tool calls. As ChatGPT works, you can see what it's searching and what data Ambient returns. This helps you build an intuition for how to prompt effectively.

  • Keep trying. If you don't get the right results on the first attempt, refine your prompt. The more specific you are (person, date, topic), the better the results.

  • We're constantly updating. You can view the available tool calls in the app details. We regularly ship new capabilities to the MCP server.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Fix

"Create" button not visible in Apps

You need Workspace Admin access

Developer Mode prompt

This is a one-time toggle; you can turn it off after creating the app

Team members don't see the app

Make sure the app is enabled/published in Workspace Settings

No results returned

Make sure the meeting was recorded and processed in Ambient

Domain search not working

Use just the domain (e.g., acme.com), not @acme.com

Authentication issues

Disconnect and reconnect the Ambient app
